The Importance of School Libraries

Beyond the academic and socio benefits here is where I have seen libraries work their magic in schools.

1. Libraries offer literature, learning and opportunities for FREE for all. The world’s knowledge is available for free, for all and the best part is with a good librarian you have your own personal guide.

2. For autistic children and or children with sensory issues, a library can be an especially important space for a sensory break. High schools in particular can be very overwhelming, a quiet space can help a student reset during downtime. It can also be a quiet safe space for all.

3. I was constantly amazed by the work of the school librarian of a previous school, when we worked together. As librarian she knew not only every student but what they were reading and she could recommend what they should read next. Her knowledge was truly mind blowing. Never underestimate the power of a good librarian in a school.

4. The library allows students to explore who they are safely and privately. Teenage years are a time of discovering who you are and reading allows young people to explore all aspects of themselves, their politics, sexuality, family relations, history, religion, culture, mental and physical health to name a few.

What are your thoughts on libraries in schools? What other roles do they play?
